This exhibition explored notions of placemaking and how this impacts us in a time of accelerated change. Through photographs, drawings, animation, paper works, painting, and sculpture, the works in this show highlighted how artists have been inspired by architectural practices, urban planning and the sheer force of their imaginations, as a means to explore both real and impossible spaces.
Later in 2016 Art Spin presented in/future, a multidisciplinary art and music festival on the West Island of Ontario Place. As we programmed site-specific works in that iconic venue built on artificially constructed islands, a space in transition and calling out for ways in which it too could be re-imagined, we had been considering ideas of utopias, future visioning, nostalgia, urban design and city planning that served as the seeds for this exhibition.
