June 28th's Art Spin was a great kick-start to the season, bringing in hundreds of eager participants and allowing us to share some great work with you all.
We had a very successful tour and wouldn’t have been able to do it alone. We started things off in (1) Trinity Bellwoods Park as per usual this year, with free bike tune-ups courtesy of Bike Pirates, as well as an interactive piece; Lindsay Zier-Vogel involved participants in her Love Lettering project, this time with a bicycle inspired theme, and then distributed them along the tour, hiding them in various urban areas.
Artist Ann Marie Hadcock created a site-specific installation that inhabited the park, and Lilly’s Lunches joined us with some delicious sandwiches and baked goods from her beautiful delivery bike.
Our first stop on the tour was a musical piece by Scott Thomson at (2) The Great Hall. The piece, titled Buzz, featured guitarists Ken Aldcroft, Harley Card, Michelangelo Iaffaldano, John Russon, and Steve Sladkowski, and was generously funded by Martin Neale over at Hoop Driver Bicycles. Following that, we headed over to (3) gallery Neubacher Shor Contemporary to visit Daydream Believer by Jen Mann and The Way Out is a Trap by John Smialek.
The tour then headed northwest to the lively (4) Sorauren Park where we witnessed a dance performance Box Set by the Throwdown Collective. This piece, by dancers Zhenya Cerneacov, Mairéad Filgate and Brodie Stevenson, was a fun and energetic addition, drawing additional crowds from the neighbourhood.
We ended the tour on Sterling Rd. where we visited various artists’ studios at (5) 213 Sterling, a recent hotbed of creativity. Then we made our way over to (6) Forgetus Collective for our final stop: a solo exhibition of recent work by emerging artist Ali Short. We wrapped things up with an after-party there, featuring the marvelous accordion playing of Tangi Ropars, as well as some great Indonesian food by Babi&Co.
We would like to thank all of the participating artists, galleries and studios mentioned above, as well as our trumpeting emcee Michael Louis Johnson, leading the front of the tour, and John Cairnes keeping the stragglers in beat with his bike-trailer sound system. Thanks to Niomi and Will for their skills behind the bar, as well as our kind sponsors for this tour; The Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Hoop Driver Bicycles, Dave and Irving, the guys behind the Promise Events.
