shoreline speaker spin - july 23rd 2017

ABOUT

ABOUT

A new approach for Art Spin, we were proud to host the first Shoreline Speaker Spin on Sunday July 23rd, 2017. Unlike a regular Art Spin bicycle tour, this event featured a variety of engaging speakers, each addressing us from a different and unique site in the city as we explored the old shoreline of Toronto, as well as a musical performance by Kontraband Kollektif and a project by our artist in residence Daniel Rotsztain, see below for more details about both our speakers and artists. Since we had to cancel our July 16th event on the islands due to persistent flood waters, we decided instead to explore Toronto's old shoreline which was significantly filled-in as the city expanded in the early 1900's. This speakers tour allowed us to include more than arts programming, as we discussed urban planning and public art, as well as local architecture, history, and geography.

The bicycle-led tour featured short site-specific talks by:

Julian Sleath - CEO of the Bentway, speaking at the Bentway
Daniel Rotsztain - Artist & Urban Geographer, speaking on the waterfront at Yonge St.
Rebecca Carbin - Public Art Program Manager for Waterfront Toronto, speaking at the public artwork Water Guardians
Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins - Artists, speaking at their public artwork Water Guardians
Madeleine McDowell - Artist & Educator (programmed by Myseum of Toronto), speaking at the Keating Channel
John Wilson - Co-Chair of the Don Lands Committee (programmed by Myseum of Toronto), speaking at the Keating Channel

We were thrilled to partner again with Myseum of Toronto to present a conversation between Madeleine McDowell and John Wilson, moderated by Myseum's Executive Director, Karen Carter, sited at and about the strangled mouth of the Don River, and its pending revitalization.

Kontraband Kollektif

Here is the Soil, Here is the Water

This surprise musical performance by Kontaband Kollektif (Laura Swankey, Lieke van der Voort, and Maria-Carmela Raso) positioned the three singers inside of John Fung and Paul Figueiredo's public sculpture Sundial Folly (1995), an often overlooked but iconic public artwork in our city. The echoes of the singers voices inside of the spherical sculpture were a beautiful and haunting moment to pause and contemplate a liminal space between city and lake.

Analog Street View

Part of the Roving residency

"For the last decade, Google cars mounted with panoramic cameras have
been plying the streets of the world, automatically taking hundreds of
thousands of 360 degree photographs that are stitched together and uploaded to its Street View database.

Analog Street View is a collaboratively produced, analogue version inspired by Google’s documentation of the world’s streets. But instead of Google’s indiscriminate and automatic cameras, Analog Street View is generated by Art Spin participants, who are invited to record the passing landscape with markers and pencil crayons on a giant roll of rotating paper, mounted on a bike cart and following the Art Spin tours throughout the city."

Daniel Rotsztain's project carried over during all three of the Art Spin bicycle tours in 2017, each documenting a new route and different part of the city. All three final, illustrated rolls of paper were displayed in panorama at the Desire Lines exhibition.
